Chiddy Bang - a hip hop duo consisting of rapper Chiddy Anamege and producer Xaphoon Jones. Hailing from Philadelphia, they found fame in 2010 for their infectious single 'Opposite of Adults', a feel-good blend of indie sampling and playful lyrics. March 5th will see the release of Chiddy Bang's hotly anticipated debut album, 'Breakfast'; lead single, 'Ray Charles', has been on regular rotation on Radio 1 and the album promises to be nothing short of party gold. We caught up with Chiddy to find out about this scrumptious offering.

Hi Chiddy, how are you?
Hey man, yeah I'm real good. It's great to be back in the UK; our record label is based here and we have had a lot of support here so it's always good to come back.

Your new album, 'Breakfast' drops here on March 5th; can you explain the title and what fans can expect?
Yeah man, basically breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we're offering our aural breakfast. This album is the first thing we have to offer and really we just want to bring the music home and give the fans our own nutritious offering. Whenever me and Xaph had recorded a dope track or whenever we had a big gig, we would always celebrate good things with a huge breakfast, so yeah, we're just bringing it all home.

People perhaps know you best for your 2010 hit, 'The Opposite of Adults'; why so long between that single's release and the release of 'Breakfast'?
Yeah, tell me about it, to be honest we thought the same. We expected that we'd drop a single and then a month or so later we'd have our album out. It's taken such a long time because it's our first record and we've been learning the ins and outs of the music industry. Everything we've done up to now we've done free-form and self-released; this time round we wanted to spend time making the dopest shit we could and developing our sound.

And how was the recording process?
It was a mess, man, we were recording song after song and presenting it to the label and they just kept telling us to go back and try again; for a while it seemed that all they wanted was 'Opposite of Adults' part 2. But of course we wanted to progress, we were going through a transition with our music. Eventually though, we found a way of making it work, you have to demand a lot of yourself, and the record label was really supportive, they loved the new single.

Tell us about the new single, 'Ray Charles'?
Well we couldn't believe it was the track the label wanted, but they loved it. It was literally the last thing we recorded, me and Xaph were kicking back in the studio drinking and smoking. Xaph was laid back playing me some beats and he was wearing these huge shades and I swear he looked just like Ray Charles, and really that's all the song is about. It's all a freestyle, pen didn't touch paper, and it's just us having fun. We never thought it would be a single. It's the same with the video, we like to have fun there too and we are sure to not take ourselves too seriously.

You have a real old school 'He's the D.J., I'm the Rapper' vibe about you, which I think you manage to make sound fresh because your musical backgrounds are so noticeably different; how does your creative partnership work?
Yeah we do have a totally different background, I'm a real hip-hop kid from Jersey and Xaph is like this real electro, indie kid from Philly but I think it really brings the freshness and I think we create something really beautiful. Xaph has this spontaneous energy, his beats always blow me away. I love to freestyle, I broke the record for the longest freestyle infact, and Xaph'll just keep playing beats, and another beat and another beat and I'll just do my hip-hop thing. It's a really unique situation.

Recent hip-hop music seems to have taken a turn, lyrically, towards the introspective (Drake, Kanye etc.), you're bucking the trend with tracks that offer a De La Soul like playfulness ('Opposite of Adults') and Rakim like braggadocio ('Mind Your Manners'); what is the Chiddy Bang Philosophy?
The Chiddy Bang philosophy? I guess just believe in yourself, no matter what your background is, like I said, I'm just some hip hop kid from Jersey and I learned that you gotta certify yourself cause no one else is gonna certify you. I've gotta believe that I'm the dopest rapper and I've got to make sure everyone else knows. And have fun of course.

Who else do you like in hip-hop right now?
Man, that's a hard one. I've got a lot of love for Kanye and I hear he's dropping something big in 2012. My boy Tine Tempa has always been good to us and I've got a lot of love for him. I think this years gonna be big for this guy 2 Chainz, I've been listening to him for years and I think he's just starting to get the attention he deserves. Also this guy Chip Tha Ripper, he's my boy from Cleveland, sometimes we hang out together, yeah Chip Tha Ripper, he's gonna be one to watch.

When can your UK fans expect a tour?
We're hoping to tour real soon, maybe March for the UK, we can't wait man.

What are Chiddy Bang doing for Valentines day?
Well we got a lot of work and promo to do so I don't think there'll be any kissing for us this Valentines Day, but I do want to send my love over to all the lovers and wish them a Happy Valentines.
