For all those out there who haven't stumbled upon the utter genius which
is Zomboy tell us a little about yourself.
Well, I class myself as a bit of an all-rounder in my work, but my latest
material is pretty glitchy, heavy and fun dubstep. Bass driven, horrid
noises with an occasional burst of melody!
Time for one of those all important generic questions. Who’s your biggest influence in music today? And who inspired you back in the day to turn on
the CDJs and get cracking?
Well, my current styling has been influenced by a number of artists such as
Feed Me, Bare Noize, The Others, Skrillex, Rusko and tons more. But before
all that I was heavily into my 80s essence (Chromeo, Miami Horror, Midnight
Star, Star Smith & Ellie Goulding). Also im not using CDJs (yet), I’m rocking the Kontrol S4 with Traktor live.
Did you expect your current EP, 'Game Time', to do as well as it has done
in such a short amount of time? I think the last time I checked it was No. 3
on Beat Port’s Top 5 – that’s a huge accomplishment in itself!
Yeah, I did not see that coming at all! I didn't expect to chart at all let
alone reach Number 2! Each track on the EP is charting in the Top 20 at
the moment. It was awfully close to reaching Number 1 but with Skrillex's
remix of Nero's "Promises" being released there was no way I could have
competed with that! Next time, eh.
How did you get into the whole dubstep scene? Did you listen to many
genres before dubstep exploded into the mainstream?
Well, I’ve been into dubstep for a couple of years now, but it's only been
recently where I’ve seen all these new artist emerge, evolving the genre
which has gotten me interested to get involved. Before dubstep I was a huge
hardcore metal head, I also produced and recorded many, many metal bands
along with being a drummer and bassist in a couple of bands too.
We haven’t personally been lucky enough to be at one of your sets but from what we’ve heard, you go in HARD! Any up and coming sets in Sheffield we need to know about?
I’m not aware of any shows coming up in Sheffield as of yet, but things
change quickly when it comes to bookings so you could be seeing me soon!
To date, where’s your favourite set been? And where would you like to
progress to? Maybe one day when the dubstep scene really hits Ibiza hard you
will be there in Space soaking in the sun and dropping some beats?
I haven’t actually played that many shows as of yet, but the ones I have had
the privilege to play have been insane! My first ever show was at Ministry
of Sound (London) and I’ve also played The 27 Club and Cable, both also off
the hook! I’m soon to be venturing out to various parts of Europe along with
many more UK shows, so keep an eye out on my Facebook page for updates!
Ibiza...yeah, why not?
We know this question is going to be asked to you a million times in your career, but who would your ultimate collaboration be with?
I’ve said this a gazillion times but I really do want to collab with the 80s
legendary band "Midnight Star" - it would be a simple work of genius!
Have you ever thought of going mainstream to rake in the cash like
artists such as Diplo, Nero, Chase & Status, Skrillex? It’s refreshing
knowing that some guys out there are still going in without no regrets,
without calming it down for a few quid.
Well firstly, I don’t think any of those artists have really "sold out"! I
think they have just been recognised for the outstanding work and have been
lucky enough to break into the commercial realm. So if that’s what you mean
then, hell yeah, I’m down! Just don't expect to see me churn out a song with
Justin Bieber...
What can we expect for 2012? For us, 'Organ Donor' has done so
much for your status in 2011. Is there anything coming up before the new
year that’s going to break the boundaries and take your career to new
heights?
Well as I’m so new to the game I believe I’m still finding my own unique sound, and with the next release you can expect to hear a lot more diversity with other genres/sub-genres, but not straying too far away from my current "sound".
